Glossary of terms
Here are some terms that are thrown around all the time and which might be confusing if you don’t know what they mean!
AMS: Alma Mater Society. www.ams.ubc.ca
BoH: Beer on the Head. Last (sometimes second last) Thursday (sometimes Friday) of (almost) every month the Psychology department gathers in the lounge for drinks and snacks courtesy of the department head.
Bird Coop: UBC fitness centre, located in the Student Rec. Centre, by the bus loop www.birdcoop.ubc.ca
CWL: Campus Wide Login. This allows you to register for courses, check your UBC-related finances, and log on to UBC wireless internet and other UBC systems
Fob: Keyless entry system for Kenny building, using your student ID card
FoGS: Faculty of Graduate Studies, where you need to go for workshops, to drop off award activation forms, submit your thesis, etc… http://www.grad.ubc.ca/ 180-6371 Crescent Road.
GSC: Graduate Student Council, runs events for the graduate students in the department
GSS: Graduate Student Society, runs events for the graduate students at the University
HSP: Human Subject Pool, what you apply to when you want to recruit undergrads to participate in your experiments. www.psych.ubc.ca/hsp
Lounge, The: Suedfeld Lounge, where many Psychology events take place. 2510 Kenny.
Nest, The: Newly built Student Union building, the giant building on University Blvd
Pond, The: Ponderosa, a close place for quick eats and coffee. 2071 West Mall
SRC: Student rec. centre. Located by the bus loop
Stores: The storage place in Kenny, where you might be sent to get paper or supplies for your lab
SUB: OLD Student Union building, across from the bus loop
UBC: If you don’t know this one, you’re probably in the wrong place
U-Pass: BC transit pass. You get access as a UBC student through your Compass Card planning.ubc.ca/vancouver/transportation-planning/u-pass-compass-card
Village, The: Commercial area of campus, where Staples, MacDonald’s, etc is. On University Blvd, between Wesbrook Mall and Allison Rd.
Zimbra: The email system used in the psych department (yourname@psych.ubc.ca) zmx1.psych.ubc.ca/zimbra/
